J.A. “Tony” Herring, M.D.
Chief of Staff
Dr. Tony Herring has served as chief of staff at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children since 1978. He is the third physician in the history of the hospital to serve in this position. Dr. Herring is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of The University of Texas at Austin and an honor graduate of Baylor University College of Medicine. He completed his internship in straight medicine at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston and a surgical research fellowship at Harvard University. Dr. Herring also completed his junior residency in surgery and his residency in orthopaedic surgery in the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program. He completed the Berg Sloat Traveling Fellowship in 1975. Dr. Herring is a professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and is an active staff member at Children’s Medical Center Dallas, Parkland Memorial Hospital and UT Southwestern University Hospital - St. Paul. Dr. Herring has served as chairman of the Pediatric Committee of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and president of the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America. He is an associate editor for the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Herring was recently honored by the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America as the recipient of the Arthur H. Huene Memorial Award. He is the editor of the third and fourth editions of Tachdjian's Pediatric Orthopaedics: from Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children textbook and was named among the “Best Doctors in America” in the March 1996 edition of American Health magazine. He also received the Scoliosis Research Society’s Russell S. Hibbs Award for clinical research and the Ft. Worth Scottish Rite Foundation, Inc.’s, Anson Jones Award for outstanding societal contributions. He has authored and co-authored 104 refereed journal articles, 21 book chapters, one book and has edited three books.

John G. Birch, M.D.
Assistant Chief of Staff and Medical Director of Ambulatory Care
Dr. John Birch is assistant chief of staff and medical director of ambulatory care at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. He is a graduate of the University of Windsor in Ontario and received his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Birch completed his internship at Ottawa Civic Hospital and his orthopaedic residency and clinical fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Ottawa. He served as the chief pediatric orthopaedic resident at the University of Florida and was a traveling visiting fellow at Newington Children's Hospital and Alfred I. DuPont Institute. Dr. Birch also completed the Harrington Fellowship of Pediatric Orthopaedics and Scoliosis at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. Dr. Birch is a professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and a fellow member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Birch is a member of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America; the Association for the Study and Application Methods of Ilizarov in North America (ASAMI-NA); and served as president of the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society (ASAMI-NA). Dr. Birch is also a fellow member of the Association for the Study and Application Methods of Ilizarov in Italy (ASAMI-Italia) and a member of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association; the Dallas County Medical Society; the Texas Medical Association; the American Medical Association; the Texas Orthopaedic Association; and the American Academy of Pediatrics, Orthopaedic Section.

Charles E. Johnston, M.D.
Assistant Chief of Staff and Medical Director of Research
Dr. Charles Johnston is assistant chief of staff and medical director of research at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. He is a graduate of Yale University and received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Johnston completed his surgery internship at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Bexar County Hospital and his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Dr. Johnston also completed the Harrington Fellowship of Pediatric Orthopaedics and Scoliosis at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in 1982. Dr. Johnston is a professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He is also an active staff member at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and an orthopaedic consultant for the Texas Department of Mental Health and Retardation at the Abilene State School and the Denton State School. He is a member of the editorial board for Orthopaedics, a consultant reviewer for Spine and The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. B. Stephens Richards, M.D.
Assistant Chief of Staff and Medical Director of Inpatient Services
Dr. Steve Richards is assistant chief of staff and director of inpatient services at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Utah and earned his medical degree at St. Louis University School of Medicine. Dr. Richards completed his surgical internship at the University of California, San Diego, and his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Utah. He completed the Harrington Fellowship of Pediatric Orthopaedics and Scoliosis at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in 1987. Dr. Richards is a professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and is an active staff member at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and a consulting staff member at Baylor University Medical Center and Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. Lawson A. B. Copley, M.D.
Staff Orthopaedist
Dr. Lawson Copley is a staff orthopaedist at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. Dr. Copley graduated magna cum laude from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, and received his medical degree from Kansas University Medical Center. He completed both his internship in general surgery and his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received the Stanley M. K. Chung Award for Excellence in Pediatric Orthopaedic Research. Dr. Copley also completed the Dorothy and Bryant Edwards Fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedics and Scoliosis at TSRHC. He is an assistant professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and on the medical staff of Children’s Medical Center Dallas. Dr. Copley served in the United States Air Force as chief of surgical services, 96th Medical Group, and was honored with the Henry H. “Hap” Arnold Leadership Excellence Award, the Joint Services Achievement Award and the Meritorious Service Medal. Dr. Copley is a Candidate Fellow of the Scoliosis Research Society and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Marybeth Ezaki, M.D.
Director of the Charles E. Seay, Jr. Hand Center
Dr. Marybeth Ezaki is the director of the Charles E. Seay, Jr. Hand Center at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. She received her undergraduate degree from Yale College and her medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Ezaki completed her general surgery internship and her residency in orthopaedic surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. She completed her surgery of the hand fellowship at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough, England. Dr. Ezaki is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and the co-director of the hand surgery fellowship at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. She was president of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons; the Dallas County Medical Society; and a director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Ezaki is a consultant reviewer for The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, The Journal of Hand Surgery and the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics.

Christine Ho, M.D.
Staff Hand Surgeon
Dr. Christine Ho joined Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children as a staff orthopaedist in 2007. Dr. Ho completed TSRHC’s Dorothy and Bryant Edwards Fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedics and Scoliosis in July 2007 and a six-month hand and upper extremity fellowship with the TSRHC hand service team in February 2007. She received her undergraduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her medical degree from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas. Dr. Ho completed her residency at the University of Southern California in the department of orthopaedic surgery and achieved the role of chief resident in the department of Orthopaedics at the LAC+USC Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Ho is also a faculty member of UT Southwestern Medical Center and on the medical staff of Children’s Medical Center Dallas. Dr. Ho has received numerous honors and awards, including admission into Pi Tau Sigma International Mechanical Engineering Honor Society and the Order of Omega Academic and Leadership Honor Society, as well as the Leonard Marmor Surgical Arthritis Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching and Leadership in 2005.

Lori A. Karol, M.D.
Medical Director of Movement Science Laboratory and Medical Director of Performance Improvement
Dr. Lori Karol is a staff orthopaedist and the medical director of performance improvement and the movement science lab at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. She earned her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Michigan. Dr. Karol completed her general surgery internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at Wayne State University School of Medicine. She also completed the Harrington Fellowship of Pediatric Orthopaedics and Scoliosis at TSRHC. Dr. Karol is a professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Scott Oishi, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Staff Hand Surgeon
Dr. Scott Oishi is a pediatric orthopaedic hand surgeon at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. He attended medical school at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his general surgery residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and his plastic surgery residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Dr. Oishi's Hand Microvascular Fellowship was completed at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He has more than 10 years of hand surgery experience.

David A. Podeszwa, M.D.
Staff Orthopaedist
Dr. David Podeszwa is a staff orthopaedist at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. A native of Detroit, Michigan, he attended the University of Michigan and earned his medical degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. Dr. Podeszwa completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Wayne State University School of Medicine and completed an AO ASIF International Fellowship in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Bern, Inselspital. Dr. Podeszwa completed the Dorothy and Bryant Edwards Fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedics and Scoliosis at TSRHC in 2001 under the direction of Dr. Tony Herring. He is an assistant professor in the department of orthopaedics at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and on the medical staff of Children’s Medical Center Dallas. Before coming to TSRHC, Dr. Podeszwa was an active staff member in the department of orthopaedic surgery at Children's Hospital of Michigan. He is a member of the AO ASIF Alumni Association and a member of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Karl E. Rathjen, M.D.

Dr. Karl Rathjen is a staff orthopaedist at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. Daniel J. Sucato, M.D., M.S.
Director of the Sarah M. and Charles E. Seay/Martha and Pat Beard
Center for Excellence in Spine Research
Dr. Dan Sucato has been on staff at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children since he completed the Dorothy and Bryant Edwards Fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedics and Scoliosis at TSRHC in 1998. He graduated magna cum laude from Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. Dr. Sucato received his medical degree (magna cum laude) and a Master of Science degree in biophysics from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine, where he also completed his general surgery internship, orthopaedic surgery residency and basic science research fellowship. He served as one of three International Traveling Fellows for the Scoliosis Research Society in 2003. During this three-week fellowship, Dr. Sucato delivered research presentations, studied and discussed landmark cases, observed surgeries at centers throughout Europe and collaborated with international spine experts. Dr. Sucato is widely published in the area of spinal deformity and has delivered dozens of presentations worldwide. He is an associate professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and is an active staff member at Children’s Medical Center Dallas. Dr. Philip Wilson is a staff orthopaedist at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
