There are four criteria for becoming a patient at TSRHC:
- Patients at TSRHC must be referred by a physician for the treatment of an orthopedic condition, certain related neurological disorder or learning disorder, such as dyslexia.
- The child should be a Texas resident.
- The child should be 18 years old or younger. Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia patients must be between the ages of 5 and 14 years.
- The child's condition should offer hope of improvement through the services provided by the hospital.

All referrals and applications are reviewed by hospital staff on a case-by-case basis when received. If the child meets the criteria listed above, an appointment will be scheduled and a written notice will be sent to the parents/legally responsible persons, as well as to the referring physician.
Since the hospital’s inception in 1921, no patient family has been charged for services. The hospital operates solely on voluntary gifts from generous individuals, corporations and foundations.
TSRHC is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and is a member of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions, American Hospital Association, Texas Hospital Association and Dallas/Fort Worth Hospital Council.
