The Prosthetics department at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children provides comprehensive prosthetic services and on-site custom fabrication for patients with amputations or limb deficiencies. Since our Prosthetics department was created in 1975, we have fitted more than 5,000 limbs.
TSRHC's prosthetists and technicians, all accredited by the American Board for Certification in Prosthetics and Orthotics, complete all phases of prosthetic treatment at the hospital. The phases include: consultation, measuring, casting and molding for prostheses, fitting alignment, fabrication and follow-up visits. Prosthetists work closely with our orthopedic doctors, performing consultations in all of our clinics. The department has four full-time prosthetists and four full-time technicians.
Visiting the Prosthetics Department
After being referred to TSRHC, you will be seen in a prosthetics clinic by a team that includes your doctor, prosthetist, physical or occupational therapist, nurses and psychologist. You will then be referred to the Prosthetics department for the next phase of treatment. This involves several appointments, usually separated by a week or two.
Evaluation, measurement and molding (casting): 1-2 hours
Test socket fitting: 1-2 hours
Alignment/wearing trial: 2-4 hours
Delivery: 1-2 hours
Training (physical or occupational therapy, if needed): usually 1-2 hours per day spread out over several weeks
The Prosthetics department is open on weekdays. Patients are seen from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The department is located on the lowest level (L) near the “C” Bank elevators. Colorful murals of underwater themes and fish cover our hallway and waiting area walls.
Whom Will I See?
We assign each child arriving from clinic to the next available prosthetist. If you would prefer to see the same prosthetist each time you visit TSRHC, you may call us in advance to schedule an appointment. At times a technician may step in to assist with repairs or various steps in the fabrication process.
When You Return
Each time you come to the hospital, please bring all equipment the child uses, including the prosthesis, any socks, liners or special pads, crutches, walkers, etc. For lower limbs, please also bring a pair of loose-fitting shorts. This allows us to more easily take casts or measurements and to check and modify the devices as needed. For arm prostheses, a loose fitting T-shirt or tank top is preferred.
Please call (214) 559-7440 or (800) 421-1121, ext. 7440, if you have any questions or problems with your prosthesis. We schedule each patient as soon as possible, and we prefer to schedule you with the person(s) who fitted and made your prosthesis.
