Therapeutic Recreation

The Therapeutic Recreation department helps children who have an illness or challenging physical condition develop skills and knowledge needed to be involved in the recreation and leisure activities they enjoy. The TR department provides an inpatient program to work with children staying in the hospital, clinic consults to work with children as part of their clinic appointment and community outreach programs to connect our patients to resources in the community.

For more information or questions about the following programs, please call the Therapeutic Recreation department at (214) 559-7615 or (800) 421-1121, ext. 7615, or e-mail therapeutic.recreation@tsrh.org

Programs and Outreach

The Therapeutic Recreation department provides a variety of programs designed to train, educate and support children so that they may be involved in recreation and leisure activities. In addition to educating patient families and the community about child safety initiatives, TSRHC’s community outreach programs include:

  • Learn to Golf is a program that gives TSRHC hospital patients with physical challenges a hands-on introduction to the game of golf. The program provides the tools and instruction needed for patients to participate in and reap the rehabilitative benefits of the game.
  • Summer All Stars is a six week program for TSRHC patients ages 6 to 14. It emphasizes fun, fitness, healthy competition and team spirit through inclusive sports and activities, such as basketball, golf and tennis. The 2012 dates are May 14, 2012 - June 20, 2012.
  • Chance to Dance is a program designed to introduce TSRHC patients between the ages of 5 -12 to various types of dance, including modern, jazz, salsa and ballet. The program is offered on Monday and Tuesday evenings beginning January 16, 2012 to March 6, 2012 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at TSRHC. Classes are taught by professional dance instructors.
  • Adapted Cycle Evaluations
Patients with physical challenges may require adapted equipment to participate with family and friends in typical recreational activities. This is often true when it comes to riding a bike. Fortunately TSRHC serves as an AmTryke demonstration site and has therapists available to conduct the necessary evaluation in order for a patient to obtain an adapted cycle from an AMBUCS Chapter. National AMBUCS, Inc. is a non-profit service organization dedicated to creating mobility and independence for people with disabilities. Part of their mission is provide AmTryke therapeutic tricycles to individuals unable to operate a traditional bike.
  • Recreational Camps
The goals of camp are for TSRHC patients to foster independence and self-confidence, while developing and improving communication and problem solving skills in an enjoyable "can do" setting. Campers are supervised 24 hours a day by counselors made up of staff and volunteers from TSRHC.

Jas. F. Chambers, Jr. Youth Fitness Park
TSRHC’s four-acre park was created to provide a safe outdoor area for patients and families to play. The park features a tennis court, three adjustable height basketball goals, a quarter-mile walking/wheeling trail, three disc golf baskets, a bocce ball court, a putting green, a veranda with tables and chairs, a pavilion with restrooms and water fountains and a beautiful lawn for games.

Patients and families may use our play equipment. The hospital security officer at the park will supervise check out and return of the equipment. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., seven days a week, and children must be supervised by an adult at all times.
