Founded By:Orthopedic surgeon W. B. Carrell, M.D., and a group of local Masons
Hospital Background: Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) is one of the nation's leading pediatric centers for the treatment of orthopaedic conditions, certain related neurological disorders, such as spina bifida, and learning disorders, such as dyslexia. Patients receive treatment regardless of family's ability to pay.
Conditions Treated:TSRHC physicians treat thousands of patients with a wide range of orthopaedic conditions each year. Our surgeons focus on the treatment and management of children in these five Centers for Excellence:
• Scoliosis & Spine • Clubfoot & Foot Disorders • Hand Differences
• Hip Disorders • Limb Length Discrepancies
Patient Care:• More than 210,000 patients treated since the hospital's inception
• 15,000 active patients
• 40,513 outpatient visits in fiscal 2011
• 2,075 surgeries were performed in fiscal 2011
• 100 licensed beds
• Average length of inpatient stay is four days
Teaching:• TSRHC's Fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedics is a full clinical fellowship and has produced 120 Fellows, now practicing across the U.S. and spanning six continents.
• TSRHC physicians wrote the book on the treatment of orthopaedic conditions affecting children. Now in its fourth edition, the Tachdjian’s Pediatric Orthopaedics textbook is the standard reference guide for orthopaedic surgeons around the world.
Research:• Sarah M. and Charles E. Seay Center for Musculoskeletal Research consists of the five Centers for Excellence supported by research divisions and core facilities. TSRHC researchers and physicians have generated 20 patents.
Admission 
Requirements:
Orthopedic Conditions
• Texas resident; special exceptions for teaching cases
• Birth up to 18 years of age
• Referral by a physician for a condition that can be treated at the hospital

Dyslexia and Learning Disorders
• Texas resident
• 5 through 14 years old
• Referral by a physician for a suspected learning disorder
Hospital Staff:• 16 orthopedic surgeons, 25 total full-time staff physicians
• More than 800 staff members
Volunteers:• More than 800 volunteers between the ages of 14 and 94
• More than 107,000 volunteer hours logged annually
