Neurology and TSRHC
The Neurology department at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children provides care for orthopedic patients who also have related neurological disorders and neuromuscular diseases. Because a physical orthopedic condition can be the result of an underlying neurological disorder, patients admitted to the hospital’s orthopedic clinic may be referred to the Neurology department as well.
Conditions We Treat
TSRHC’s neurology clinics provide care for children diagnosed with developmental delay, cerebral palsy (limited to related orthopedic conditions), brain malformations, epilepsy and other conditions due to brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerve abnormalities. Specialized clinics have been developed to treat children with childhood motor disorders, tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), holoprosencephaly (HPE) and peripheral nerve disorders.
Research and Professional Training
TSRHC’s Neurology department is actively researching improvements in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a variety of nervous system problems. Our research has led to innovative treatments for children with brain and nerve disorders.
In 1990, TSRHC created a tuberous sclerosis complex clinic to provide proactive patient care that includes the child’s family and the medical team. The clinic is a model to TSC clinics nationwide. Since 1999, TSRHC has developed and maintained an international registry and a national database to collect information on patients with HPE. Our HPE clinic is one of three clinical centers of excellence supported by the Carter Centers for Brain Research in Holoprosencephaly and Related Malformations. In collaboration with major universities around the country, TSRHC has created a research consortium on childhood motor disorders.
TSRHC is committed to improving healthcare through innovative professional training programs. Residents and fellows from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School train with our Neurology team and contribute to the department’s research efforts.
