Pediatric Development Disabilities

What Are Developmental Disabilities?
Developmental disabilities is a broad term used to describe a variety of conditions that children are born with or acquire. Children with developmental disabilities often have physical, social, learning or behavioral challenges. Some of the developmental disabilities seen at the hospital associated with orthopedic conditions include:

  • Spina bifida
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Certain genetic conditions with orthopedic complications

Pediatric Developmental Disabilities and TSRHC
The Pediatric Developmental Disabilities department at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children provides care for patients whose orthopedic problems are accompanied by other pediatric medical conditions. The department takes an interdisciplinary approach to providing the best possible family-centered care for these children. Our staff includes physicians whose sub-specialty is neuro-developmental disabilities; dieticians; physical, occupational, therapeutic and respiratory therapists; and nurse practitioners.

In addition to working with the child, the department focuses on teaching family members about the condition and how they can help the child attain optimal physical, mental and social health.

Treatment and Support
Researchers at TSRHC are constantly searching for ways to improve treatment, care and diagnosis for children with developmental disabilities.

TSRHC has two clinics for children with developmental disabilities. In our clinics, children with spina bifida and other conditions, such as cerebral palsy, learn how to care for themselves, maximize health and be as independent as possible.

The Christi Carter Urschel Family Resource Center plays an active role in finding outside help and equipment for children and their families.

Becoming a Patient at TSRHC
Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, located in Dallas, uses several criteria to determine a patient’s eligibility. For more information on becoming a patient or referring a patient, contact our Patient Access department at (214) 559-7477 or (800) 421-1121, ext. 7477.

If your child has received medical care prior to your first visit, please bring past medical records and information.
