Medical Library Internship
The medical library intern at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children supports the information services offered to the hospital’s medical and departmental staff. The intern will work under supervision of the medical library manager and be exposed to a variety of activities involved in solo librarianship.
The intern must be enrolled in a master's level program of information and library science, preferably with coursework completed in medical library management. To meet the field experience requirement for the graduate degree, the intern and medical library manager will work together to select and develop a project that’s valuable to both the student and the hospital. The internship will include an introduction to consumer health librarianship through the Christi Carter Urschel Family Resource Center Library.
The intern is required to complete the hospital’s application process, including a background check and drug screening. For more information about the internship, please contact
Mary Peters, medical library manager, at (214) 559-7875 or (800) 421-1121, ext. 7875,

Therapeutic Recreation Internship
Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children offers a therapeutic recreation internship to students studying therapeutic recreation and/or taking classes in order to become a
Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
Our therapeutic recreation internship is a 15-week non-paid program to help prepare students for an entry-level position in therapeutic recreation. Interns work 40 hours per week and have the opportunity to work with inpatients and outpatients, as well as assist with community outreach programs. Our internship builds on what is learned in the classroom to prepare the student for success in whatever setting they choose to practice therapeutic recreation.
Our internship prepares students for the National Council on Therapeutic Recreation Certification exam, which each student must pass in order to become a CTRS.
Interns must complete the application process and schedule an interview. For more information, please contact Dana R. Dempsey, MS, CTRS, at (214) 559-7615 or
(800) 421-1121, ext. 7615 or e-mail dana.dempsey@tsrh.org.
Child Life Practicum
For those interested in becoming a certified child life specialist, a practicum is an observation experience open to those individuals preparing for a Child Life internship. A practicum provides the student an opportunity to become familiar with Child Life services and children’s reactions to hospitalization. Observation experiences and assignments encourage the development of communication skills with individuals and groups, provide a supportive environment to integrate theory with clinical practice and enhance the student’s experience with planning and implementing therapeutic activities.
**At this time, we are only accepting applicants for the practicum student opportunity. We currently do not have any internship positions available.
Requirements:
- Practicum applicants are required to have completed a core curriculum with a minimum of junior level college coursework, including child development, theories of child development, etc.
- Applicants must have completed 150 hours of verifiable fieldwork experience with healthy children in a structured environment. In addition, volunteer work with hospitalized children is encouraged.
- Applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of 192 hours of observation over the course of one semester.
