Event: The Very Basics: School-Based Identification of Dyslexia in Texas

About: This seminar is designed for Texas educators who are New to the process and procedures for the identification of students with dyslexia for the purpose of placement in dyslexia intervention programs.
The seminar will include:

A review of the current research-based definition of dyslexia

A brief introduction to test instruments for a dyslexia identification test battery

A definition-based paradigm and profile for dyslexia identification
-
The core principles of dyslexia identification, including standards of measurement, data gathering, review of early reading assessments and Response to Intervention (RtI) progress measurements

Case studies that allow the participants to recognize the characteristic profiles of students with dyslexia and to make decisions regarding placement

Examples of definition-based teacher and parent questionnaires

Rite Flight Workshop - An Introduction to the Classroom Reading Rate & Reading Comprehensive Program

About: This workshop addresses two important components identified by the National Reading Panel as needed for effective reading instruction - Reading Rate (Fluency) and Reading comprehension. Workshop materials include manuals for Rite Flight: A Classroom Reading Rate Program and Rite Flight: A Classroom Comprehension Program. These materials, developed at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, provide excellent supplements to a classroom or remedial reading curriculum. They are not intended to provide a comprehensive dyslexia intervention.

Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics: Topics for Primary Care
Date: February 28 & March 1, 2014

About: This course is designed for pediatricians, family practitioners, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants and health care professionals providing direct care to children. The purpose of the seminar is to equip primary care providers to expertly assess, identify and manage developmental and behavioral problems which present between birth and age 18. Lectures, slide presentations and question/answer sessions will be presented by guest lecturers and the staff of the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. Ample time will be allowed for discussion between the audience and the faculty. Detailed course topics, objectives and registration information will be posted when program is finalized.
