About: “Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics: Topics for the Primary Care Clinician” will be presented Saturday, September 27, 2008, at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. This course is designed for pediatricians, family physicians and primary care providers. Speakers include national experts Steven Pliszka, M.D., addressing “Complex ADHD: Controversies, Treatments and Co-Morbid Disorders,” and Frances P. Glascoe, Ph.D., on “AAP Mandate: Obstacles and Effective Implementation of Developmental Screening.” Other topics include “Asperger Syndrome: Identification and Support” and “Adolescent Academic Dysfunction: Assessment and Management.” Case studies during lunch provide additional learning opportunities. The $100 registration fee includes syllabus materials, continental breakfast and lunch. AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ will be provided.

Event: School-Based Identification of Dyslexia Seminar

About: October 1 - Introduction to Dyslexia Identification: This one-day seminar is specifically designed for those new to the process of dyslexia identification or those wishing to review basic components. The morning session includes a review of the definition of dyslexia, the state law and procedures for the identification and training for dyslexia, including advice on developing a test battery and how Texas dyslexia programs interface with Section 504 and IDEA. The afternoon session will present the core principles of dyslexia identification including standards of measurement, characteristic profile of dyslexia, data gathering and review of Response to Intervention (RtI) data. Interpretation of early reading assessments (TPRI), inclusion of teacher and parent observations and differential identification decision making will be included through case studies. October 2 - Advanced Practicum in the Identification of Dyslexia: This one-day seminar is intended for those experienced in testing and identification of dyslexia who would like to refine their identification skills when the data is not clear-cut. Participants may submit a case example for discussion prior to the seminar. Case studies will provide the foundation for developing clearer guidelines for differential identification and intervention placement decisions. Case submission guidelines will follow registration.
