Child Life Services

What is a child life specialist? 

Child life specialists focus on the social, emotional and developmental needs of infants, children and adolescents in the hospital and promote optimal psychosocial development.

Services Provided:

  • Preparation and support for medical procedures/surgery
  • Medical play to increase understanding of the hospital and medical equipment and provide an outlet for self-expression
  • Therapeutic play activities
  • Support for caregivers and siblings
  • Education about a new diagnosis
  • Coping techniques for parents, children and adolescents to utilize during medical experiences

Child life specialists utilize these techniques to help decrease fear and anxiety and help infants, children and adolescents to cope with hospitalization.
