Achievements

Researchers at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children are committed to finding ways to improve the treatment and care of our patients. The hospital’s major findings and patents are highlighted below.

Major Findings
  • The first gene discovered to be associated with idiopathic scoliosis, a progressive condition that causes the spine to curve, identified at TSRHC in 2007. The study is outlined in the May 2007 issue of the American Journal of Human Genetics.
  • In 2011, Dr. Wise and TSRHC’s Molecular Genetics research team identified two additional genes - CHL1 and DSCAM - that give new insight into the condition.
  • The TSRH® SILO 5.5 Spinal System, developed in 2005. A modified design of the TSRH® Spinal System developed in the 1980s, it allows for shorter surgery and uses lower profile implants for patient comfort.
  • A gene associated with PAPA syndrome, an inflammatory disease affecting the joints and skin, identified at TSRHC in 2000.
  • The TRUE/LOK External Fixation System, developed in 1998 and now manufactured and marketed by Orthofix, Inc.
  • The TSRH® Spinal System developed in the 1980s, manufactured and marketed by Medtronic, Inc.
