Learn to Golf
The Learn to Golf program gives hospital patients with physical challenges a hands-on introduction to the game of golf. The program provides the tools and instruction needed for patients to participate in and reap the rehabilitative benefits of the game. Learn to Golf was launched in 1998 by the hospital’s therapeutic recreation department and was built upon the National Amputee Golf Association’s First Swing program.
Each year, hospital patients ages 6 and older from cities across Texas are invited to participate in Learn to Golf clinics. The clinics have been held in Dallas, Plano, Fort Worth, Austin, Waco, Longview, theTyler area, Wichita Falls, Lubbock, Denison, Odessa, San Antonio, Lewisville and Grand Prairie. Patients receive specialized training from golf and allied health care professionals, a rules book and golf equipment, if needed. In addition, the hospital may assist patients in finding golf instructors in his or her area who provide junior golf lessons and programs.
Golf and allied health care professionals learn methods for teaching golf to patients with physical disabilities in the program’s Tee Up for Teaching seminars.
The Learn to Golf program has received support from generous donors, including the North Texas Golf Course Superintendent’s Association; Annie L. Stevens Fund of The Dallas Foundation; Leo A. and Inez D. McDonald, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee; and the National Alliance for Accessible Golf, which is funded through the United States Golf Association (USGA).
