Dr. Carol Wise is director of Molecular Genetics and director of Basic Research at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Texas A&M University and a doctorate degree in biochemistry from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. She completed postdoctoral fellowships in human molecular genetics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Dr. Wise is a professor of orthopaedic surgery and holds a secondary appointment in the McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Dr. Wise’s research focuses on identifying genetic causes of pediatric musculoskeletal conditions. Her work includes the discovery of genes responsible for inherited bone and joint disorders in children, and genetic variants that increase risk of idiopathic scoliosis. She has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers, many book chapters, and two patents. She holds memberships in various professional societies, including the Scoliosis Research Society, The Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, the American Society of Human Genetics and the Texas Genetics Society, where she served as 2007-2008 president. Dr. Wise has received various awards including finalist for The Dallas Morning News “Texan of the Year” award (2007), “Texas Trailblazer Award” from The Family Place (2008), Community Builder Awards (John L DeGrozier, and Brooklyn Lodges, 2008 and 2010), Anson Jones Award (Ft. Worth Scottish Rite Foundation, 2009) Forney High School Hall of Honor (2009), “100 Women, 100 Years” award from the YWCA of Metropolitan Dallas, and Distinguished Service Award, Texas Genetics Society, 2011.
